To the average onlooker the sport of powerlifting looks as easy as moving some heavy weights from point A to point B. A simple enough task, they can’t grasp why anyone would ever want to do it at the risk of serious injury. However, as with all things in life there is more than meets the eye and by looking further you’ll find it goes beyond just tossing some slabs of iron around.
“The Iron is the best antidepressant I have ever found. There is no better way to fight weakness than with strength” 
Powerlifting is a sport that for many becomes a metaphor for life. A manifestation of their struggles, it provides an outlet to be able to literally overcome them. One in which the weights can come to symbolize just about anything depending on the person and their experiences. In a sense the act of powerlifting can be “therapeutic” because of this, allowing its participants to indulge in a level of unrestrained emotion. For some this is expressive through yelling and cursing but for others throwing the weights around is enough. Either way there is something to be said about the freedom of expression the gym allows in a world that forces people to suppress those emotions. 
“The Iron never lies to you. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds.” 
When all other variables in life are constantly changing whether it be school, work, family, or friends; the weights in the gym provide a constant. No matter what happens, a lifter will always know that a number is a number and either they can get stronger or they can get weaker. The simplicity in that fact can make life easy when everything else around may be hard to understand.
“Try to lift what you’re not prepared to and the Iron will teach you a little lesson” 
While lifters strive to be successful in all aspects of their training, the truth is that the greatest motivation comes from their failures. It may seem ironic but failure means there’s opportunity for growth and that potential for self improvement is a huge motivator. So when a lifter fails at something and then comes back to demolish it, that number means so much more and the feeling of success becomes quickly addicting. 
“Learning about what you’re made of is always time well spent, and I have found no better teacher. The Iron had taught me how to live.”
All in all the sport allows people to grow not only physically strong, but also mentally and emotionally by teaching the values and lessons of life through a literal form. It makes people better human beings because of it and THAT’s why people choose powerlifting. It is not to show off, to boast, or to put others down but its personal growth. The physical you see is but only a translation of the mind.
